About Each Section on the Pages of Japanese Kanji
Navigation (Top & Bottom of the Page)
- You can work your way through these cards in any of the following sequences. Perhaps if would be useful to go through the cards at least once using each sequence.
- JLPT = Japanese Language Proficiency Test level (JLPT 0 = Not on the list for any level)
- Grade = the grade the kanji is introduced in schools in Japan
- Newspaper = the frequency the kanji appeared in Mainichi Shimbun (1980-1984?) as given in KANJIDIC
Kanji Info (At the Top of the Page)
- Just under the kanji is my favorite "one meaning" in English and "one reading" in Japanese.
- On the right are English words that cover the meaning, then the on-yomi, then the kun-yomi.
- Under this is the number of strokes followed by the indexing radical.
- Under this is a set of links to pages covering the same kanji on other websites.
- Breen = Jim Breen

Selected Good Words to Memorize
- These are words that I think are the best ones to memorize in order to remember this kanji and its readings.
- I chose one example of each yomi using what I felt was the most frequently-used word. In cases where the yomi is rare, then there are no examples.
Quiz and Flashcards
- If there were more than 5 words marked as "priority" words in EDCT,
then a quiz is included.
Selected Words with Definitions from WWWJDIC
- I limited this list to 10 words. If there are less than 10 words, then no other words using that kanji were used more than 3 times in the data that was analyzed.
- The order is based on the same word frequency list that I used for www.manythings.org/japanese/news.
- Ranking:
- **** = over 10,000 times
- *** = over 5,000 times
- ** = over 1,000 times
- * = over 500 times
- no * = less than 200 times
The following have been dropped from the pages, at least for now.
From Saeko Komori's Kanji Card
- I've written several email messages requesting permission to do the following, but have not yet received a reply.
- These are all the words that were used on MIT's JPnet website as part of the kanji cards.
- On the original cards there were only 2 or 3 words per card. I merged them together so the user has more examples on many cards on this site than on the JPnet site.
- Most of these words are linked to a sound file (.au). There were a few words on these kanji cards that did not have sound files.
From Charles Kelly's Selected Words
- I'll probably eventually add this to the pages, but at this time, I think maybe keeping the pages smaller and faster-to-download might be better.
- These are all the words using this kanji that were found on my list of selected high frequency words (words worth learning).
- If more than 6 words were found, then instead of appearing on the page, the words are offered in the Flash Quiz/Flashcards format.
From Charles Kelly's FLVB Data
- I'll probably eventually add this to the pages, but at this time, I think maybe keeping the pages smaller and faster-to-download might be better.
- These are all the words using this kanji that were found on a list made by merging all the data from my "Foreign Language Vocabulary Builder" which was a computer program I wrote many years ago. I merged all the files together in 1994. Much of the data was compiled long before that.
- If more than 6 words were found, then instead of appearing on the page, the words are offered in the Flash Quiz/Flashcards format.
From EDICT - Non-priority Words
- I'll probably eventually add this to the pages, but at this time, I think maybe keeping the pages smaller and faster-to-download might be better.
- This list only appears if no priority words were found.
